Summary Student Project: This report determines the different diagnosis and causes of defects, which could be found in residential houses or HDB flats. It also proposes rectifications for the defects so as to eradicate problems faced by the residents. Though there are many defects, this report will mainly focus more on paintwork defects. Data for the report was mainly obtained through research from the Internet and through books, to gather all the information of the different defects. Due to the many defects we would find in any building, and realising the fact that many people might want to save money from hiring experts to repair, this report is proposed to allow readers to have extent knowledge of different defects, along with the causes and solutions to the defects. Based on the findings, it is proven that building maintenance is very important, as it not only helps to maintain its aesthetics; it also helps maintain its value. With the correct diagnosis, the correct remedial action can help to make the building maintenance programme successful and economical. When occurrences of defects are found and the information is processed in the system, this means professionals responsible for designing of new rehabilitated houses will be able to take note and avoid mistakes in designs or specifications in future. Eradicating the problems implicated on residents by providing accurate rectifications helps to cut unnecessarily high costs for owners to maintain a building well enough for occupants to live comfortably.
